Depression
Depression is prolonged sadness that affects our overall daily functioning. Research has demonstrated that depression does not result from “weakness”, yet this misconception seems to exist even in the year 2018. The easiest way to differentiate clinical depression from normal sadness is to notice if the low moods you are facing is affecting your overall day-to-day activities such as sleep (too much sleep/too little sleep), appetite (too little/too much), your interpersonal relationships (frequent distress with your partner), your work or school life, and your overall motivation and drive.
What causes Depression?
There is no one cause for depression, but rather many factors such as genetics, complex gene-environment interaction.
Early theories of depression and neurochemistry point towards a serotonin or norepinephrine deficiency – a problem with the balance as the the cause for depression, however neurochemistry research is still an evolving field. Most depressed individuals evidence no such deficiencies, although subgroups do. Current theories acknowledge the complexity of the neurochemical systems that participate in depressed behavior.
What are the symptoms of depression?
• Sadness or irritability
• A loss of enjoyment in once pleasurable activities
