Disability Adjustment Counselling

When we are born, our parents imagine a perfect life for us. A life filled with happiness, health and wealth. More often than not, we cannot predict what really happens to us. Sometimes there are good surprises and sometimes there are unpleasant ones. We never expect anything unpleasant and when it happens, it throws life out of gear. How do we cope up with the changes that cannot be reversed?

Let us go through the story of Parikrama.

Parikrama was a successful IT professional. She regularly went on travelling and explored new places. She was thrilled by the cultural changes and diversity of languages everywhere. Her other passion was to trek mountains and conquer the peaks. She also made sure to have a trek every year to pump up her energy levels.

One day while on her annual trip towards Himalayan Mountain, she met with a major accident which turned disastrous. She had to lose both her legs and was permanently put on to a wheelchair. When reality struck her, she was devastated. Her life had changed so much, all her dreams and desires seemed impossible.

Depression and isolation became her companions. She found there was no purpose left in her life apart from living on the wheelchair with people offering sympathy to her.

Meeting a Disability Adjustment Counsellor

When life takes a huge turn, our closed ones seem to have become distanced from us. We do not want to share our feelings, maybe we do not want to trust them. Even though they may understand our difficulties, finding solace from them looks tough.

A therapist is someone who opens up her compassionate heart to you with empathetic ears. She is someone who is a trained professional to understand your situation and helps you towards having a fulfilled life despite having a major loss. She is the one who creates a non-judgmental atmosphere where you can freely express your feelings of despair without hesitation.

How does the therapist work with disability adjustment?

Here is how the therapy sessions went with Parikrama

Parikrama: I feel totally lost without my legs. I can’t tell you, how much I loved trekking the mountains. I can’t believe that I lost my legs while travelling to the Himalayas. My doctors say I can never trek in this condition. I have a disability now.

Therapist: I really understand. Losing legs and not able to trek for the rest of your life is something that you never imagined. Your loss is unthinkable.

Parikrama: I want to get back to trekking sooner. Can you help me with developing powerful willpower, so that I can start trekking again?

Therapist: I can see again, how passionate you are towards trekking the mountains. I really wished I could grant you super willpower to trek again. There is a huge gap between what you want and what you’ve got, and the bigger the gap, the bigger is the hurt. I am wondering if you want to tell me more about trekking and why it was important to you.

Parikrama: I had a sense of achievement. I had good health and worked hard. It made me feel great.  I felt most connected with nature. Every single step I took on the mountains made me closer to God. The whole feeling revitalized my spirits every time. Best feeling ever.

Therapist: That’s good to hear. I can hear that trekking gave you a meditation kind of experience. Connecting with nature gave you internal peace, right? Also, trekking led you to take care of your health and work hard also right? If there was a way for us to work here in sessions that would offer you a lot of meaning and purpose in the midst of you pain and suffering, would that be useful?  Something that would offer you a lot of similar aspects of your life before the accident happened?

Parikrama: How can you say I can still feel in a similar way? How is it the same? It’s not! Looks like you also don’t get my point right.

Therapist: It’s not the same. It’s not the same thing at all. Not even close. I can see how upset you are right now, and I can only begin to imagine how much you’re suffering.

Parikrama: Hmmmm

Therapist: As we go along, I want to introduce you concepts that will give you more idea on creating a meaningful life while we handle this pain more and more as we go along. This incredible amount of suffering will no longer hold you back in your life.

Parikrama: Yes, I hope that helps me.

What if Disability Adjustment Counselling Sessions are not affordable?

At Aware, the belief is firm in making counselling/therapy affordable to everyone to improve the mental health of individuals in our country.

The tools and techniques given to you at the sessions help you manage yourself and make you less worried about dealing with it. Every bit of the session will be structured in a way to suit your individual issues and offer lifelong benefits of taking counselling/therapy.

What if I cannot attend sessions when I am away?

We live a life of busy bees. In this era, work and family call for a lot of travelling. Your therapist/counsellor will be available to take distance sessions in your preferred medium like an online session or a telephonic session.
